“Everybody can be great… because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. you only need a heart full of grace.  A soul generated by love. “
– Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

NEU students with organizers from A Village at Work after a day of spreading the word about community building efforts.

On Monday, January 19, ten students from Northeastern University trudged through the snowy streets of Lower Roxbury to spread the word and collect donations for our efforts to revitalize 90 Windsor Street as part of MLK Service Day.  Special thanks to Slade’s Bar and Restaurant for graciously allowing us to use their space to organize this event.  The volunteer event began with a brief conversation about how the mission of the center coincides with Dr. King’s beliefs about the power of community.  The volunteers quickly jumped to action and we were able to assemble a large mailing and hand out over 300 flyers to area neighbors and businesses.  A large thank you goes to Good Eats for providing pizza for all the volunteers.  From Slade’s to Good Eats to Northeastern University, together we are A Village at Work.  It’s amazing what our neighborhood can accomplish when we all work together.

Yours in peace, justice, and community,

Erica Pernell
